Lanzarote tour to Timanfaya National Park, the Green Cave and Jameos del Agua
In the Essences of Lanzarote excursion, we have offer you a tour with a selection of the most spectacular things that you can see on the island. In just one day, we will show you the places that make Lanzarote a destination unique throughout the world.
The itinerary begins in the town of Yaiza, one of the island’s best places for contemplating its popular architecture: small houses with white walls that contrast with the green paint of their windows and doors.
Here we will make our first stop in order to eat breakfast or take a walk through the town before proceeding with the tour.
We will continue the route through the impressive Fire Mountains, a name that perfectly describes the barren landscapes, seas of lava and craters that you will discover in Timanfaya National Park. This place was produced by the island’s most recent volcanic eruptions, which occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. We will walk over the surface like normal without even realizing that just 13 metres below, the temperature reaches 600 degrees.
That does not mean that those volcanic processes don’t continue to take place inside the earth. In fact, in the place known as Islote de Hilario, we will conduct 3 experiments to demonstrate this. First, we will give you some small hot rocks that we retrieve just centimetres from the surface.
Second, you will see how a small amount of tinder catches fire when placed just a metre deep. Third, you will see how a geyser forms when water is introduced into underground tubes 10 metres deep, and then abruptly returns in the form of steam.
In Islote de Hilario, we will visit the Devil’s Lookout Restaurant, the first of the works by artist César Manrique that we will see today.
On its enormous barbecue reaching 7 metres deep, notice how meat and fish are cooked with just the heat that emanates from the depths of Timanfaya.
The final part of our visit to Timanfaya National Park will be done via bus, since this is the only way we are allowed to tour the Volcano Road. During the 14 km of the tour, we will contemplate an impressive volcanic landscape, full of craters, mountains, ashes and different types of lava.
The excursion continues to the northern part of the island, but along the way we will stop to get something to eat at the Mirador de los Helechos, one of the island’s most beautiful lookouts, from which we can see the towns of Arrieta, Punta Mujeres and Haría, together with the Valley of a Thousand Palms, where numerous Phoenix canarienses, the typical palms of the Canaries, grow.
We will continue our route with the visit to the Jameos del Agua, one of Lanzarote’s most beautiful and most-visited places. It is a volcanic tunnel that rose after the eruption of the Corona Volcano about 4,000 years ago. Given that it’s so close to the coast and below sea level, ocean water filters here and has formed a type of interior lake.
Upon approaching the lake, you will see that a type of small, endemic, albino and blind crab inhabits it. These are popularly known as “los jameitos”and are only about 1 centimetre in length.
But what makes this space magical, where nature and art shake hands, is the architectural adaptation and design of the great artist César Manrique.
The incorporation of foreign elements into the jameos, like plants, an artificial pool, an underground auditorium and a museum, have ended up forming an intricate part of the complex.
Our final stop will be to visit the nearby Cueva de los Verdes (Green Cave), an enclave that also arose after the eruption of the Corona Volcano, and where we offer you a tour of approximately 1 kilometre through the interior of this volcanic tunnel.
The Green Cave gives off a mysterious vibe, with secrets that you can only discover by entering it with us on this underground journey. Although with that said, if you suffer from claustrophobia or have mobility problems, we recommend you do not enter, since when all is said and done, it is an underground walk over very rough and uneven terrain.
The magic of this place is an ideal place to end our Essences of Lanzarote excursion, an offering dominated by the island’s volcanoes: first with their majestic appearance in Timanfaya National Park, later with their more amenable and artistic appearance in Los Jameos del Agua, and finally, in a more intimate and underground aspect in the Cave of the Greens.
We hope you spend a great day discovering the most important places in Lanzarote!
