Why visit Segovia
Segovia is internationally known for its Roman aqueduct that runs through the heart of the city and is its iconic symbol. It really is an impressive work, even more so knowing that it is over 2000 years old and that, of course, it was built by hand out of rock, without concrete, mechanical cranes or electric tools. And yet it still stands.
Its wealth increases even more when you discover that the Segovia aqueduct is much more than it traditionally appears to be, since it is a work that spans over 16 kilometres in length, over which it transports water from the mountains to the urban centre.
While the aqueduct is the great emblem of Segovia, another common image is the spectacular Alcazar, a castle that stands between the ravines of the Clamores and Eresma rivers. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, since it was a favourite luxury palace of Alfonso X the Wise. Its aspect has changed a lot since then; practically all of the Spanish kings have used it and modified it. The current result is a large complex of towers, battlements and walls that were constructed over time, and it is believed to be one of the castles that inspired the Disney palace.
The Alcazar is located on the outskirts of Segovia, but you can also find monuments of great interest without leaving the city centre. Of special note is the gothic cathedral located in Plaza Mayor. This is the oldest and most valuable temple in the city, but scattered throughout its historic streets, an important collection of Roman churches are also conserved. They include the churches of San Clemente, El Salvador, San Lorenzo, San Justo or Vera Cruz, all of which are worth a visit.
In addition to visiting Segovia for its 3 major tourist attractions, there are other reasons for visiting the city.
You can see the palaces of the ancient nobles, such as the Picos House or Lozoya Tower.
See two of its most important Romanesque churches, the Church of San Martín and the Church of San Andrés, both declared National Monuments.
Taste the typical dishes of Segovian cuisine, especially roast suckling pig, beans from the farm and veal stewed in the traditional Segovian way.
These attractions are available to you on the excursions to Segovia that we propose. Carefully read the information about each excursion and choose the one that is most interesting to you.
